Casualties of War Series

Quilt I: Karina Lau

Quilt II: Avery Felder

I have been commissioned by graphic design professor Daniel Jasper to make a series of five quilts depicting images of female soldiers who have died in the Iraq war. Two are completed, and the next three will be completed within the next nine months. The goal of his project is to "visually enumerate and differentiate the growing list of United States military fatalities in the current Iraq war. These are projects that enumerate the total number of fatalities (quantity) yet strive to differentiate among the individual soldiers killed (quality)." Try looking at the photos from a distance, or by squinting to allow the squares to blend together and the face to better emerge. Each quilt square is an individual, yet put together with other individual squares it creates a much more interesting and powerful whole.

The Lau quilt was exhibited at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. View the website of the show at www.addinginsulttoimagery.net.
